We are so excited to be taking part in our first LYS Day this year! Many of you may be wondering "What is LYS Day?" And some may be wondering, "What's an LYS?"
LYS stands for Local Yarn Store. It's your friendly, independent and locally-owned yarn store full of all the fiber, yarn, and notions you could ever dream of!
There are "LYS"s all over - each one with its own personality, atmosphere, and yummy selection of specialty yarns. LYS's play an integral part in their community - they teach timeless crafts and skills, inspire people to learn something new and follow their creative passions, and support other artisans and small businesses.
More than a business, an LYS is a community unto itself. Here, people who love yarn can come together and revel in the joys and sometimes sorrows (#frogging) of knitting, crocheting, and more. If you're a beginner - you'll find people excited to bring you into the "flock" and answer all your questions. If you're an expert - you'll find people in awe of your talent and who can't wait to hear about your latest knit-chievements.
4 walls and a few balls of yarn is all it takes for a little store to become home and haven for all the yarnies around it.
In recognition of how awesome and vital local yarn stores are, The National Needlearts Association (TNNA) started "Local Yarn Store Day" six years ago. LYS Day is designed to show support for small businesses while bringing together a unique community of knitters, crocheters, weavers and spinners to drive awareness and celebrate fiber crafts. Vendors and retailers all over the country will be coming together to showcase the benefits of locally-owned yarn stores through an array of special products, classes, and more!
Wherever you are, you can find a participating LYS near you! Check out THIS LIST for Local Yarn Stores in your area!
At Walther Handmade, we are working hard to celebrate #LYSDay in style! We'll have specialty hand-dyed yarn from Zeoli Yarns, door prizes, yummy food, and more! Make plans to spend the day with us and keep an eye for more details over the coming weeks!
